What is Herbalist Day, also known as Thank an Herbalist Day?
Everyone has a unique story of their own herbal journey. Herbs touch so many lives – they are there for people of all ages and from all walks of life. For some, a kind word from a friend set them on this path. For others, a cherished book or the curiosity born from exploring a garden sets things in motion. Regardless of how you started on your herbal journey, now you are committed! You are continually learning and exploring, living a unique lifestyle that is inclusive of so many wonderful friends, mentors, and companions.
Every now and then, it is good to pause and celebrate the community around us. Herbalist Day, known also as Thank an Herbalist Day, is celebrated on April 17th gives us the perfect opportunity to reflect and share with the people who have helped shape us, guided our paths, worked alongside of us, and been our inspiration on our herbal journeys.
What is Herbalist Day?
When is Herbalist Day?
Herbalist Day is celebrated in the spring as the plant world awakens on April 17th!
What do you do on Herbalist Day?
As Herbalists Day (Thank an Herbalist Day) approaches, think about how you came to be part of the herbal community. Who has been your herbal inspiration along the way? Someone you have never met can inspire your herbal path just as much as someone who has physically crossed paths with you. Perhaps you have a favorite author or have followed along on an herbalist’s journey by reading their blog. Maybe tuning in to a regular herbal podcast has provided you with insight and inspiration.
Who helped you put down roots? Who encouraged you and helped you flourish in your education? Formal or informal teachers and mentors, friends, family, coworkers – support from your community can come through so many different people! Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful things about herbalism is the inclusiveness and the diversity of the community. Our reflections can bring home to us just how amazing and beautiful our networks really are.
As you reflect on the community around you this coming Herbalist Day, you may find that you want to reach out in gratitude to someone who has been part of your herbal journey. If you aren’t quite sure how to express yourself, perhaps something below will be the perfect match for what you want to say.

Share Plants
If there are plants in your garden that are looking a little crowded, why not share? There is beautiful symbolism in lovingly sharing an herb or two between gardens and building plant communities as we also build our human community.
Share Soap
Handmade soaps with herbal ingredients are a thoughtful token to share with those we wish to thank within our herbal communities. Whether we made them ourselves or are supporting small herbal businesses nearby, the simple pleasures derived from incorporating such small herbal indulgences into a daily routine are sure to be treasured by the recipient.
Share Tea
As busy as life gets, the gift of tea encourages our recipient to take a few healing moments just for themselves. We can share a favorite blend, a sampler, or a tea that we just know is perfect for them, and hold it in our hearts that in their quiet moments they may be blessed with health, peace, and inspiration for their own journeys.
Remember that as herbalists, we are both students and teachers. Our community will be that much stronger if we take a little time to show appreciation and gratitude for the ways we help one another. Our expressions needn’t be grand gestures –little notes and shared treasures are some of the sweetest small pleasures our herbal lives have to offer! This April 17th, take a little time to reach out. As you thank an Herbalist, you are sure to see your community flourish and thrive around you.

We appreciate all of you – our readers, fans, and students! While we cannot send out tea and soap to all of you, we want to express our appreciation nonetheless! Here is a “thank you” to all of you who are walking this herbal journey with us!
