5 Herbal Rituals to Ease Into Going Back to School

This time of year is the back to school season for many people in the Northern Hemisphere. As the school year begins, it’s the perfect time to establish rituals that support both learning and wellbeing. It’s helpful to note that herbal practices that make the most of going back to school don’t need to be elaborate. Instead, they can be simple, achievable, and aligned with your rhythms.

While Herbal Academy courses are available all year round (and we encourage you to jump in any time of the year!), many people start thinking about picking up a new online herbal course as the summer season shifts to fall and back-to-school. It’s a great time to begin here at Herbal Academy, with up to 40% off herbal courses sitewide through September 15, 2026. So whether you are going back to school in a physical classroom or starting an online course like our Family Herbalist Path Package or The Mushroom Course, we have five herbal ritual suggestions that will help you ease into this school year with support for mental focus and overall wellbeing.

Here are some of our favorite rituals—what are you most needing?

  • Matcha Lemon Balm Gummies to bring focus.
  • Aromatherapy companions, like rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) or lavender (Lavandula spp.), to enhance mental clarity in your herbal study area.
  • Grounding breaks outdoors, soaking in sunlight, and reconnecting to the earth to help find balance.
  • Herbal foot soaks to soothe tired feet.
  • Nighttime unwinding rituals to promote restful sleep.

Matcha Lemon Balm Gummies

Did those Matcha Lemon Balm Gummies in our list get your attention? They’re a supportive (and delicious) way to bring focus and memory support into your daily rhythm. We suggest taking them first thing in the morning or before a brain-intensive study session. And they are so simple and fun to make! Both lemon balm and matcha support cognition with focus, energy, and memory throughout the day. And who doesn’t love popping a tart gummy in their mouth for that uplifting mental boost?

Aromatherapy Companion

Looking for a scent-sational way to improve focus and memory while reducing feelings of stress during a study session? Aromatherapy can be immensely supportive, enjoyable, and easy to incorporate into your routine via an essential oil roll-on, herbal sachet, or room diffuser. Some favorites include rosemary for focus, lavender for calm, or mint (Mentha spp.) for a mental boost.

Suggestions:

  • For focus, diffuse rosemary essential oil while studying, or dab a Brain Aid essential oil roll-on onto your wrists or temples.
  • To calm study stress, try making this DIY lavender sachet, apply a lavender essential oil or one of these stress blends in a roll-on to wrists or temples, or diffuse lavender essential oil in your study space.

Sunlight and Grounding Break

We love that online courses allow us to study from anywhere and connect with online community. It’s also important to step away from the computer, as too much time staring at screens can stress the nervous system and trigger headaches and feelings of anxiety. Taking regular breaks engaging the senses, grounding and reconnecting with nature, and enjoying tactile activities can make all the difference. Take a walk outside and turn your face to the sun, stroll through your garden or neighborhood, sit quietly at the base of a tree and take deep breaths, prepare a wholesome snack, get hands-on by trying out a new herbal recipe from your course, go draw a plant—you get the idea! Make time for small moments that bring you back into your body and make you feel cared for and nourished.

Herbal Foot Soak

Looking for a soothing pick-me-up? An herbal foot soak is a lovely way to give tired feet a moment of rest after a busy school day. Whether you are walking from class to class or out foraging for herbs and mushrooms with the knowledge you’ve learned from your online Herbal Academy courses, an herbal foot soak can soothe tired feet and ease muscle tension. Try lavender (Lavandula spp.) flower buds, calendula (Calendula officinalis) flowers, or chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) flowers in warm water.

Instructions: Add ½ cup fresh or ¼ dried herb (or a combination of herbs) and 1 cup Epsom salt to a foot basin. Fill with hot water off the boil and steep for a few minutes. Add cool water to adjust the water to a comfortable soaking temperature. Soak your weary feet for 15 minutes.

Nighttime Unwinding Ritual

An unwinding ritual at night can be a really effective signal to your body that it’s time to shift from study/active mode to rest mode. By making it a nightly routine, you are essentially training your nervous system to expect sleep. Some of our favorites to signal the body to rest include a warm mug of chamomile tea (or any sleep-supportive tea blend) or a calming herbal bath.
