Herbal Arnold Palmer Recipe: Just What You Need!

In the late 1960s, Arnold Palmer, a famous American golfer and humanitarian, was known to request a drink mixture of mostly tea with a splash of lemonade, which was later named after him. The beverage is readily available as a non-alcoholic staple due to the perfect balance of bold black tea and citrus-sweet lemonade. The…

Herbal Beer: An Ancient Drink for Modern Times

It’s funny — I never thought I would write anything positive about beer. My husband homebrews, so it has always been his thing. It was never something I cared too much about since I’ve never had much of a palate for beer. I’ve always preferred wine as my alcoholic beverage of choice — until recently…

MAKING AN HERBAL GLYCERITE These sweet herbal tinc MAKING AN HERBAL GLYCERITE
These sweet herbal tinctures use food-grade vegetable glycerin + water to extract the active constituents and flavor from herbs. It’s a good option for children, animals, and adults when palatability & alcohol sensitivities are primary considerations.

STEPS (from Making Herbal Preparations 101 Course):
🌼 Grind/crush dried herbs or finely chop fresh herbs into small pieces.
🌼 Fill a glass jar ¼-½ full with dried herbs (expands as the plant material absorbs the menstruum). If using fresh herbs, fill to 2 inches from the top.
🌼 Dried herbs: add enough just-boiled water to wet the herbs. (Step isn’t necessary with fresh herbs) You want to be able to press the herbs with a spoon and see the water squeeze out of them, but you don’t want so much water that they’re floating in it. Fill the remainder of the jar with glycerin, covering herbs by 1 in. Place a square piece of natural waxed paper on top of the jar. Seal with a lid.
🌼 Shake the jar to ensure that the herbs + glycerin are mixed well.
🌼 Label. Store in a cool, dark place.
🌼 Day 2: See if the glycerin needs to be topped off due to expansion of the herbs. All plant material should remain thoroughly saturated.
🌼 Allow glycerite to macerate for 4-6 weeks, visiting every few days to shake jar.
🌼 Line a wire strainer with a few layers of cheesecloth & decant the mixture. Squeeze as much liquid from the herbs as possible.
🌼 Cover jar, and let the liquid settle overnight in a cool, dark location to allow any herb sediment to settle to the bottom of the jar. Optional: strain glycerite through a finer filter to remove sediment.
🌼 Transfer the glycerite into sterilized, dark-colored glass bottles. Label, and store in a cool, dark place.

This herbal honey for respiratory support is easy to make at home and will help you avoid the unwanted chemicals in many store-bought allergy-relief products. If you happen to live somewhere with wildfires, then you can also keep this honey on hand during wildfire season to help soothe the irritated throats and respiratory passageways that often come with smoke in the air.

🍯 1½ cups raw, organic honey (preferably locally sourced)
🍯 3 tablespoons fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seed
🍯 2 teaspoons juniper berry (Juniperus communis)
