Program Details
The Advanced Herbal Course requires students to successfully pass 10 unit quizzes with a score of 80% or higher. In addition to reading and studying the lesson material throughout the course and passing the quizzes at the end of each unit, the course includes unit exercises and a monograph project to be completed on a self-study basis. The unit exercises have been developed to help students engage with and explore lesson content in more detail. The monograph project guides you through developing plant monographs for herbs of your own choosing. We recommend choosing 3-4 herbs discussed in each body system unit or wellness unit in the course and experiencing and researching each of these herbs, compiling the information into plant monographs.
Upon successful passage of all quizzes, students will be notified of their graduation with a signed certificate of completion.
While we recommend spending 1-2 months of serious study in each unit, students have the ability to work at their own pace toward completion of the course and can spend more or less time in each unit. Students will have Lifetime Access* to the online portion of the program. Each of the units, recipes, graphics, and video transcripts are available to download as printable PDF files should students want digital downloads or print copies.

The Advanced Herbal Course Outline
UNIT 1: HERBAL WISDOM TRADITIONS AND HISTORY
Introduction; The Humoral System; Western Energetics in Contemporary Practice; Roots of Herbalism in America; The American Botanical Movement; Chinese Medicine; Ayurveda; Global Healing Traditions
In honoring those who have come before us and paved the way for herbalism into modern times, the course begins by setting the stage with the unfolding history and herbal wisdom traditions which have shaped Western herbalism. Begin your journey by exploring herbal wisdom traditions from across the globe and the energetic systems that have helped form the foundation of Western herbalism. You’ll hear from practitioners of Southern folk herbalism, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and many other traditions to better understand how herbal support is woven into different systems of healing.
View the lenses through which many cultures have integrated plants into a holistic approach to wellness, travel back in time to the American botanical movement as it was influenced by Indigenous groups and many other cultures, and review a myriad of techniques for applying herbal energetics to your herbal practice.
UNIT 2: BOTANY AND PHYTOCHEMISTRY
Plant Anatomy and Taxonomy; Plant Identification; Plant Chemistry; Herbal Pharmacology; Herb-Drug Interactions; Evaluating Research
After traversing through history and herbal energetics, you will plant your feet firmly back on the ground to take a look at the plants themselves. Explore plant identification and the chemistry and the pharmacology of those plants, which will be a huge asset when reading scientific literature and developing your own understanding of why particular herbs work the way they do.
You will also get guidance about possible herb-herb interactions, herb-drug interactions, and how to evaluate the scientific literature so you can continue adding depth to your understanding of plants and how they interact with the human body.
UNIT 3: HEALING
The Nature of Healing; The Mind-Body Connection; Reaching the Spirit; Preparations and Practices for Nurturing the Spirit; Aromatherapy
The ways that plants support us cannot all be explained through chemistry and scientific literature. It’s also imperative to take an in-depth look at the nature of healing itself as a framework for why herbs work the way that they do.
In this unit, you’ll discover the myriad ways plants can reach the emotional body and the spirit, along with the fascinating topic of the mind-body connection. This unit closes with a lesson on aromatherapy as a tool for emotional health and mood support.
UNIT 4: BLOOD, LYMPH, AND MUCOUS MEMBRANES

In addition to performing their own unique functions, the blood, lymph, and mucous membranes have in common the vitally important function of working in unison to defend your body from exposure to foreign elements. The mucous membranes cover all internal body surfaces that have direct exposure to elements of the outside environment. Along with the blood, the lymphatic system is responsible for herding immune cells quickly and efficiently toward invading pathogens. Recognizing common conditions that could compromise these systems is an important skill for advanced herbalists.
This unit explores the anatomy and physiology, common complaints, etiology of imbalances, herbal therapeutic approaches appropriate for the blood, the lymphatic system, and the mucosa, and offers case study videos on mucous membranes and anemia.
UNIT 5: THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Anatomy and Physiology of the Endocrine System; Health and Wellness of the Endocrine System; Adrenal, Thyroid, and Parathyroid Health and Wellness; Blood Sugar Dysregulation and Diabetes; Two Case Studies
This unit explores the endocrine system: the body system involved with the creation and release of hormones. You will start off with an overview of anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system, along with a fascinating look at psychoneuroimmunology, which is the way the endocrine system, the nervous system, and the immune systems all interact.
You will learn the important dietary, lifestyle, and herbal considerations for managing stress and keeping the endocrine system in tip-top shape, along with herbal tips for supporting those with adrenal gland, thyroid, and parathyroid imbalance and disease. Learn about some of the evolving theories on how the body ages, and the herbs and supportive strategies that have been well researched—or used traditionally—to help people live better, longer. You will examine conditions that are common in older adults, including cardiovascular disease, aging skin, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, and the pathophysiology, conventional approaches, herbal strategies, and other supports for each.
There are a lot of things to take into account when working with an older adult population, such as impaired digestion, the higher potential for multiple pharmaceutical medications, complicated health histories, and more. This unit concludes with a fascinating case history that highlights the importance of understanding herb-drug interactions.
