Traditional and Folk Herbalism
Jamaican Folk Medicine has been useful to reference when friends, clients, and students mention plant uses learned through Jamaican tradition, and it has helped me gain familiarity with plants that are very commonly used in Jamaica and make connections. I invested in this book after noticing how often Jamacian plant use comes up when conversing about herbalism. It has been a conversation starter in my consultation room, and an often used reference in relating to an international student body. Some, no, many folk medicine books only make brief mention of a few herbs and you have to really hunt for those, and still it can be unclear what species is referred to and whether the plant is poisonous or not. Jamaican Folk Medicine is exact about species, and also references constituents as well as uses. It is not a full instructional use and preparations book, but it is thorough in the ways the authors chose for it to be; cultural information about healing philosophies and folk and spiritual healing practices, and scientific identity and phytochemistry information for the plants.
