Repairing the Leaky Gut: Supporting the Underactive Thyroid Naturally
The thyroid is a tiny endocrine gland with a massive impact on every single body system. In the Thyroid Health Intensive in The Herbarium, Alyssa Dalos, RH(AHG), introduces the importance of the balanced thyroid, which regulates metabolism, cardiac metrics, breath, body temperature, digestive health, cognitive function, and mood.
The thyroid falls out of balance in two major ways, both of which we explore thoroughly within the three sessions of this Intensive. While the underactive thyroid typically manifests in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the overactive thyroid often shows up with Graves’ disease. Both extremes of either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid can be supported naturally with clinically effective herbs and supplements, nutritional strategies, and lifestyle changes (although it is important to note that pharmaceutical interventions may be necessary, even critical, in both cases).
Herbal Support for Gut Repair and HypothyroidismÂ
The video below is a sneak peek into the new Thyroid Health Intensive and includes discussion on repairing the gut. In the intensive, Alyssa Dalos shares her five-point system for supporting thyroid imbalances by focusing on managing specific hormones, eliminating problematic foods, repairing the gut, addressing nutrient deficiencies, and managing stress. Each session is broken down into simple, accessible sections like how the thyroid works, how it breaks, and how do we fix it using herbs, foods, and lifestyle changes. Plus, you’ll find recipes, like the one featured in the video below for a thyroid-supportive herbal tea blend for addressing leaky gut syndrome. Vulnerary and demulcent herbs coat and soothe the lining of the gut, decrease intestinal permeability, and address the collection of symptoms known as leaky gut syndrome, which is directly connected to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In this video excerpt from Herbal Academy educator and herbal clinician Alyssa, we learn about each component in a recipe for Gut Regenerative Tea.Â
Inside the Intensive, you will find:
Session 1 | Understanding the thyroid: The first step to understanding the thyroid is to comprehend the anatomy and physiology of this important endocrine gland, including the nuanced hormonal regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid feedback loop, as well as the many body systems and processes that it impacts. In this session, Alyssa also explores approaches to subclinical hypothyroidism as well as best practices for supporting a healthy thyroid on a day-to-day basis.
Session 2 | A Holistic Approach to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: In this session, we explore best practices in herbs, lifestyle, and nutrition for the underactive or sluggish thyroid. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is one of the most common manifestations of hypothyroidism, and we cover this pervasive autoimmune condition in detail, including how it affects the body and how to mitigate its symptoms safely and effectively.Â
Session 3 | A Holistic Approach to Graves’ Disease Hyperthyroidism: In Session 3, we go in-depth on Graves’ disease, or when the body has an overactive thyroid. The anatomy and physiology of hyperthyroidism is introduced in an easy-to-understand framework detailing why and how the thyroid gets out of balance, and strategies to support the autoimmune hyperthyroid are broken down into simple steps.
Session 4 | Additional Resources: Session 4 provides several more resources that explore the best ways to support a healthy thyroid.
