Herbal Chapstick Recipe for Dry Winter Lips

Whipping winds, cold air, and a dry climate make for a common annoyance—chapped lips. Winter is particularly harsh on the lips, a fragile skin barrier, and it is no wonder so many stores line their end caps with chapstick during December. Tis’ the season for piling on extra layers! Not just for the body, but also for the lips and face! This holiday chapstick recipe is a powerful herbal tool, perfect for stocking stuffers, and great to simply stuff in your own pocket when you leave for the day.

The Wound Healer

This chapstick recipe has a special herbal ingredient. One word—yarrow. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), the wound healer, is a famed herb used in ancient Greece and Egypt and in many places throughout the centuries to soothe wounds and support the body’s healing process. This beloved herb is also antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and analgesic (Herbal Academy, n.d.). All of these properties are perfect for coating, soothing, and protecting chapped lips. The yarrow-infused oil in this chapstick recipe will glide over your lips, providing protection. Furthermore, yarrow’s energetic profile is cooling, which is soothing for chapped, irritated lips, even during the colder months.

Handmade Gift For The Holidays

As the holidays approach, I like to make a batch of chapstick to give as gifts. Creating my own winter chapstick and sharing it with family and friends is such a special way to showcase what I’ve learned! The ingredients are clean, have strong herbal benefits, and anything handcrafted makes for a thoughtful gift. Here’s how you can make your own batch of holiday chapstick for winter. You just need a few supply items and a couple of ingredients—your lips will thank you!

Herbal Chapstick Recipe for Winter

Powerful, cooling and clean ingredients make this chapstick recipe a new go-to for the winter. Yield:6 tubes.

Ingredients

4 teaspoons of shea butter
2 teaspoons of beeswax or soy wax
3 teaspoons of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) leaf and flower-infused avocado oil
1 teaspoon coconut oil
5 drops of vitamin E oil
4 drops of peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil

Directions
  • In a double boiler (preferably one with a spout), melt beeswax and shea butter until it becomes liquid. A pan on the very lowest heat can also be used, as well as setting a jar inside a pot of water. The wax and butter will melt very quickly!
  • Add in yarrow oil and allow it to melt together.
  • Stir in coconut oil until melted.
  • Turn off the heat, add in vitamin E oil and peppermint essential oil, and mix together.
  • Pour liquid carefully into chapstick tubes. I found this kit that allowed for easy pouring with little mess. The chapstick tubes attach to a top lid. If there is spillover, it lands on the lid versus down the outside of the tubes (so convenient).
  • Allow your chapstick to cool and solidify. The process takes about an hour.
